Degree Show

I've done it! I have achieved my long held dream of a degree in fine art - it is such a relief and I am still a bit dazed. No rest for me just yet as we are supposed to be on duty from 9.30am until 8.30pm daily while the exhibition is open to the public.

I have had some great feedback from visitors and people have understood what my work is about, which is encouraging to hear.

This picture is of a wall piece which is about 12 feet wide by about 7 feet high, it is stencil, paper, vinyl lettering, pencil and spray paint directly applied to the wall.

And this is an image of the books that were used in the video which is being shown on the TV screen on the right of the picture.

Now I am looking forward to less conceptual-based work, with perhaps some traditional printmaking and painting - yippee!

Nearly There!

Well, the hard work is all done and dusted and it is now a case of awaiting the official results. The provisionals look good and I feel quite hopeful that I have passed.

The degree show opens for preview on Friday night, which is when all the press, families and friends come and the booze flows, then the exhibition remains open for the following week until the 27th. We are all expected to be in our places all day, every day, but we are working out a rota system so that we can have some time to see the rest of the exhibition for ourselves.

From what I have seen so far, the work is excellent with some superb pieces, lots of paintings this year, strong representation from the printmaking department and some amazing sculptures too. That is just the fine art section, I always love to see the textiles and illustration work as well and the design departments always have professional work to see.

When the show ends, I will have to spend a couple of days restoring the wall back to the plain white it should be and taking stuff home, then I shall be freeeee!

Just a few more days to assessment and we are spending very long days in our studios. From last friday to today I cleared out everything from my old studio and begun to prepare the final assessment space ready for hanging the work. This preparation involved moving out all excess furniture, cleaning and scrubbing the floors (imagine paint, glue, tape etc), washing, filling and painting the walls (imagine paint..), bringing in equipment such as plinths, electricals, tables and generally trying to hurt as many body parts as possible!

It has been absolutely exhausting and I have just been coming home, showering, eating and going to bed for a whole hour before waking up in a cold sweat, convinced I have forgotten something. I will be spending the next 4 days installing the work in situ and then it will be all finished.

Our postcards have arrived and this is a picture of mine which is from a photograph of one of my burnt books. The degree show feels so real all of a sudden!
